Proposed SR-836 Southwest Expansion

From the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority:

…the project is envisioned as a limited access expressway that will represent a physical barrier to discourage urban sprawl farther into the Everglades.

Oookay.

I have to say that I get what they are trying to do here… they are trying to make SR-836 like the Miami-Dade equivalent of the Sawgrass Expressway in Broward. That being said, I think its a dumb idea.

I remember sometime back that ther plan was to send the extension down 137th avenue. I even remember some conceptual drawings of overpasses around Kendall Drive and some of the major crossings. I know NIMBY forces are hard at work trying to prevent such a thing from happening, but pushing this roadway further west is just going to screw things up even more.

Awesome. So, when this project nears completion (in about twenty years) they’ll have to expand it yet again. Insanity can be defined as “doing the same thing over and over again”. When will we learn that the cat and mouse road construction game does not have a winner? The only solution is public transportation.

They’re trying to make this like Broward’s Sawgrass Expwy, which is a physical barrier between city and Everglades, and it’s successful. Noone would dare build west of the Sawgrass Expwy. However, I’d be against this project, because knowing Miami commissioners, they’d let developers build west of the expressway.

If you put an expressway out west, it will cause the value of the land around it to skyrocket. It will create irresistible pressure for more development farther west. This is the worst place to improve auto-centric transportation. Investments should focus on the urban core to encourage more population density. Without density, nobody will use transit.

I wish the MDX would start building transit lines. They are really good at roadway expansion, and I bet they would actually be able to run an east/west line.

MDX is studying the east/west line as BRT along the dolphin experssway. I’m looking into the project and as I get more info I’ll post.

To MDX….the people that already live out there chose that lifestyle the way it is. Why encourage more sprawl in an already sprawled out area? MDX, C’mon get with the program!!!

As of late, I’d rather entrust MDX than MiamiDade Transit or FDOT.

Atleast MDX gets shit down. MDT and FDOT never get any project finished, and if they do, it took 40x longer and they did it wrong.
