Market is within easy walking distance of the South Miami Metrorail station. Good selection of locally grown, “beyond organic” produce and prepared foods. Not as much selection as Josh’s in Hollywood (Sundays only-AIA & Hollywood Blvd), the best produce market around, but South Miami has enough selection that you can do all your produce shopping there.

There are other similar markets selling local grown food including those in Overtown & LIberty City, both easily accessible by transit. The Overtown farmers market is just blocks from the Overtown Metrorail station. Their growing fields literally adjoin the market.

Transit has expressed interest in bringing farmers markets to some of its facilities-how cool would that be? Imagine a farmers market directly at a Metrorail station so you can stop at the station, shop, and get right back on the train. I think urban agriculture has the potential to utterly transform Miami’s blighted landscape as well as provide incredible entrepreneurial opportunities since the startup costs are usually low (one “rents” the land by giving the owner as much produce as s/he wants). All they need are customers . . .

Awesome points Mike! I be posting a follow up about the market and how markets are excellent as ‘urban activators’.
